Have You Ever Huff Coughed?

Have you ever heard of huff coughing?


Huff coughing is recommended for mucus buildup because it helps to loosen and clear mucus from the lungs.


It involves taking a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds, and then forcefully exhaling the air in a “huff” sound.


How to Practice Huff Cough


Sit upright and take a deep breath in through your nose.


Next, make a “huff” sound as you forcefully exhale through your mouth, like you’re trying to fog up a mirror.


Repeat this 2-3 times, then take a few normal breaths before repeating the cycle.

Pursed Lip Breathing (PLB)


Pursed Lip Breathing is a simple breathing exercise that can be particularly beneficial for individuals with lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This technique helps to slow down the breathing pace, making each breath more effective and bringing more oxygen into the lungs. Here's how to practice PLB:


Relaxation: Sit down in a comfortable position and relax your neck and shoulder muscles.


Inhalation: Breathe in slowly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed.


Exhalation: Pucker your lips as if you were going to whistle, then breathe out slowly and gently through pursed lips, taking longer to exhale than to inhale.


Repetition: Repeat this exercise until your breathing becomes normal.


PLB works by moving more oxygen into the lungs and helping to expel carbon dioxide, keeping the airways open longer and relieving shortness of breath.


It can be particularly useful during physical activities when you are especially congested. It’s important to practice this technique regularly to make it more natural and effective!


Diaphragmatic Breathing


Diaphragmatic Breathing, also known as belly breathing, focuses on retraining the diaphragm to do the majority of the work in breathing, especially for individuals with lung conditions where the diaphragm may not function optimally. Here's how to practice diaphragmatic breathing:


Relaxation: Find a comfortable position, such as lying on your back or sitting in a relaxed posture.


Inhalation: Breathe in deeply through your nose, allowing your abdomen to expand as you fill your lungs with air.


Exhalation: Breathe out slowly and gently through your mouth, allowing your abdomen to fall as you empty your lungs.


Repetition: Practice this technique regularly to retrain your diaphragm and make it more effective in moving air in and out of your lungs


Diaphragmatic breathing helps to maximize the amount of oxygen that goes into the lungs and can be particularly beneficial for individuals with phlegm, congestion and respiratory issues.


The Huff Cough and both PLB and Diaphragmatic Breathing are valuable tools for managing phlegm, respiratory symptoms and improving breathing efficiency!
